Privacy Policy

FlavourLore is designed to collect as little information as possible. This policy explains what that means in practice.

The short version
FlavourLore does not collect your name, email address, or any personal information.
FlavourLore does not require you to create an account to use the app.
FlavourLore's Tour Guide feature uses your location locally on your device only — it is never transmitted to our servers.
FlavourLore does not share any data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.
In-App Purchases are handled entirely by Apple — we never see your payment information.
FlavourLore complies with PIPEDA (Canada), GDPR (European Union), COPPA (United States), and Apple's App Store Guidelines.

1. Who we are

FlavourLore is a cultural education app developed and operated by FlavourLore (info@flavourlore.ca), based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The app is available on iOS through the Apple App Store.

2. Information we do not collect

FlavourLore is designed to be used without providing any personal information. We do not collect:

No account or login is required to use FlavourLore. The app functions entirely on your device with content stored locally.

3. Information collected automatically by Apple

FlavourLore is distributed through the Apple App Store. Apple collects certain data independently when you download, install, and use any app on iOS. This data is subject to Apple's own Privacy Policy and is not accessible to us. This may include:

Any analytics we receive from Apple are aggregate and anonymous — we cannot identify individual users from this data. For example, we may see that our app was opened 500 times on a given day, but we cannot see who opened it.

4. In-App Purchases

FlavourLore offers optional In-App Purchases to unlock individual culture packs. All purchases are processed exclusively by Apple through the App Store's StoreKit system.

5. Audio, microphone, and speech recognition

The Island Talk and Words That Survived game modes play audio recordings of Caribbean dialect phrases and Indigenous language words. These recordings are pre-recorded audio files stored within the app itself.

Voice answers: FlavourLore includes an optional voice answer feature that uses your device's microphone for speech recognition. When you choose to answer a trivia question by voice:

Tour Guide narration: FlavourLore's Tour Guide feature uses text-to-speech to narrate information about nearby landmarks. When narration is requested, a text-only request (containing no personal data) may be sent to our server to generate audio. No device identifiers, location data, or personal information is included in this request.

6. Location data (Tour Guide)

FlavourLore's Tour Guide feature uses your device's location to provide culturally relevant audio narration for nearby landmarks. This feature is entirely optional and must be manually enabled by the user.

Safety notice: Tour Guide is designed to be set up by a passenger before a journey. Do not interact with FlavourLore while operating a vehicle.

7. Local storage on your device

FlavourLore stores certain data locally on your device to provide the app experience. This includes:

This data lives only on your device. It is not transmitted to us or any third party. If you delete the app, this data is removed from your device. If you use iCloud backups, Apple may back up this data as part of your device backup — this is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

8. Children's privacy

FlavourLore is rated 4+ on the Apple App Store and is designed to be appropriate for all ages, including children. We take children's privacy seriously.

FlavourLore complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States. Because we collect no personal data from any user, we are compliant by design.

Parents and guardians can use Screen Time (iOS Settings → Screen Time) to manage their child's access to the app and In-App Purchases.

9. Third-party services

FlavourLore does not use any third-party analytics services (such as Google Analytics, Firebase, or Mixpanel), advertising networks, or social media integrations.

The only third-party service involved in the operation of FlavourLore is Apple, which provides the App Store distribution platform, StoreKit for In-App Purchases, and iOS system services. Apple's privacy practices are described in Apple's Privacy Policy.

10. Data sharing and disclosure

We do not sell, trade, rent, or share any personal information — because we do not collect any personal information to share.

In the unlikely event that we are required to disclose information by law, court order, or governmental authority, we will comply with that requirement. Since we hold no personal data, there is nothing to disclose beyond what Apple holds independently.

11. International users

FlavourLore is available globally through the Apple App Store. Since we collect no personal data, we do not transfer personal data across borders.

For users in the European Economic Area (EEA): We do not process any personal data as defined under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). No lawful basis for processing is required because no processing occurs.

For users in Canada: FlavourLore complies with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). As we collect no personal information, your rights under PIPEDA are not implicated.

For users in California: We do not sell personal information as defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). We collect no personal information subject to CCPA rights.

12. Your rights

Because FlavourLore collects no personal data, there is no personal data to access, correct, export, or delete. However, if you have any privacy-related questions or concerns, you are always welcome to contact us.

If you believe we have inadvertently collected information about you, please contact us at info@flavourlore.ca and we will investigate and respond within 30 days.

13. Security

Since FlavourLore does not transmit or store personal data on external servers, there is no personal data at risk from a server breach.

Data stored locally on your device is protected by iOS's built-in security features, including device encryption when your device is locked. We recommend using a strong passcode on your device and keeping iOS updated.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the app evolves. When we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.

If we ever introduce features that involve collecting personal data — for example, a user account system or cloud sync — we will update this policy before those features launch, and the new policy will clearly describe what is collected and why.

Continued use of FlavourLore after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. If you disagree with any changes, you may stop using the app and delete it from your device.
